Ministry of Digital Affairs Imposes Legal Sanctions on Meta for Incomplete Advertisement Disclosure on Facebook Platform
Regarding the issues that the Facebook platform, operated by Meta. Inc., failed to disclose information about the commissioned publisher and sponsor of advertisements by the Fraud Prevention Act, the Ministry of Digital Affairs, in collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Justice, the Taiwan High Prosecutors Office, and the Executive Yuan's Anti-Fraud Command Center have jointly reviewed the matter and confirmed that two advertisements violated Article 31, Paragraph 1, Subparagraph 2 of the Act. Consequently, the Ministry has fined Meta 50,000 NTD for each case, as per Article 40, Paragraph 1, Subparagraph 4 of the same Act, and ordered Meta to make the necessary corrections within a specified period. The fine may be imposed consecutively if Meta fails to take corrective action within the given period.
The Ministry emphasized that it had communicated with the platform operators multiple times when drafting the Fraud Prevention Act and its sub-regulations. The platform operators expressed their willingness to comply and have implemented measures to fulfill their legal obligations. However, the Ministry still found concrete violations of the Act; therefore, it has imposed penalties in accordance with the law.
Upholding the principle of administration according to law, the Ministry will continue to urge platform operators to comply with regulations strictly and fulfill their responsibilities in information disclosure and source management. The Ministry will continue to work closely with relevant agencies to strengthen mechanisms against online fraud, thereby safeguarding the public's information security and legal rights.
